Painter is a pretty special piece of software. That’s been around for 28 years, it’s been built for artists, and it even has an artist advisory council. And thanks to this, Corel continues to drive the software.

This year’s update is about improving performance, refining existing tools, and improving the organizational system, and ’everything is designed to ensure that when you work on a project, very little stands in the way of your creativity.

For those of you who don’t know, Painter is known for its natural media emulation, that is, it digitally reproduces brushes and real-world painting effects with amazing results.

But what new features does Painter 2021 bring to the table ??

Hardware Advantage

First there is the Brush Accelerator. This is a feature that analyzes your system’s specifies and configures Painter to work at maximum performance on your machine. There are multiple GPU and CPU improvements along with support for AVX2.

The performance menu can tell you what technology Painter is taking advantage of, and even gives you the ability to disable GPU acceleration at any time, even for specific brushes.

However, it stands to reason that the score derived from these tests depends on the amount of load that other running applications are putting on the system at the moment. As always if you are going to use a processor intensive application and want it to work at its best, the most sensible course of action is to close all currently open applications that you don’t need to use at the moment.

All of these performance enhancements mean that basic manipulation like zoom and rotation is very smooth. The more complex alterations will largely depend, as you’d wait, on your computer’s skill.

But making better use of available power is only part of the story.
Improved contextual property bar will make you more productive

How you work is crucial and providing you with the information you need quickly and effectively makes it a better experience. With that in mind, painter’s property bar has been revamped. When you select a tool in the sidebar, the property bar, which is context sensitive, gives you specific preferences for your selection. Tags for new users have been added and the tools have been more logically grouped.

This also enabled some functionality that had previously resided elsewhere. For example, some brushes alter the property bar to offer options that were previously only available through the menu bar. It makes it much easier and faster to select options like flowmap textures and paper grain.

All in all, besides getting used to the new design, it’s all very welcome.

Harmonies are a new feature to help you use complementary colors

Color enhancements.

Corel’s color wheel is pretty useful by default. The outer circle allows you to choose the hue, and the inner triangle is for saturation and value. But now Painter offers you a new split preview while you’re mixing your colors, which includes new color ramps. They are all designed to help you choose the best color for your needs.

This works well with the mixer palette (found in that section’s second tab), where you can mix your new section with other colors, just like you would paint in the real world. Of course, the advantage of working in the digital realm is that you can save those mixes in libraries for later use.

A really great feature for newcomers is Color Harmonies. These offer you complementary colors based on your current selection.

There are six different types of harmonies available; in fact, you can display them all at the same time. In addition to helping you create a more computer-controlled harmonious creation, you can choose to lock some harmony sets so they don’t change the selected color, and if you want a specific combination, you can save those swatches in your library and use them at a later date , or in another project.

New brushes, with a renewed preview of all of them and better performance to start

The most impressive part of Painter has always been his brushes. It comes with more than 900 preloaded and offers the possibility to buy additional ones. This can be done directly from the app itself, where the brushes can also be combined into bundles so you can get exactly the set you need.

Painter is known for his “real” brushes, brushes that replicate how they would behave in the real world; watercolors blend together, for example thick paint can almost be sculpted depending on the chosen brush, and even brushes can run out of paint (although you also have the option to disable it). There are many functions available that work best when drawing with a pencil. For example, particle brushes respond to the angle the stylus points to, and frankly, the precision you get with a stylus is by leaps and bounds on a mouse or touchpad.

In line with Corel’Al focusing on performance, Painter 2020 users will notice an improvement in speed when using brushes in this new version, and Corel is also introducing two new brush sets, “fast and ornate” and “fast and simple”.

But the great news here is that all the previews have been updated for Painter 2021. Before that, I often had to do a few test strokes with a new brush to see how a brush behaved, since the preview was quite Unreliable, but this should no longer be the case and the previews now offer quite “what you see is what you have” precision. Or at least veteran users will no longer need it; Newbies may still need to try some to see how they really work on the page.

There is also a new compact brush selector panel. That’s a floating palette that can be resized horizontally or vertically based on your personal design. That’s a great way to switch between brushes quickly and easily.

Refreshingly, in an environment where every major company seems to be embracing the subscription model, you can only get Painter by buying it right away. The full price for Painter 2021 is $ 429 (£ 359.99), or an upgrade from a previous version will cost you $ 229 (£ 179.99).

The serial number will work on a Mac or Windows machine. Of course, you can only use it on one machine at a time, but this is very welcome for people working on multiple platforms.
Final verdict

Painter has always been very impressive and accomplished software, but this version’s focus on performance and productivity make this a highly desirable upgrade.
